The honey bees have finally arrived, they are Carniolans from a supplier in California. Kristina and I installed the queen in this beautiful handmade hive, set in the herb garden area of Rick Bayless’ yard. They are good to go, there are eight frames per box, several contain brood comb and others some honey to get them going. They were super hungry after being mailed across the country, and they are already hard at work on the flowers nearby.

Stay tuned for bee updates as we check brood, add frames, and harvest honey later this year.

Natural wood hive set in the herb garden.

Carniolan bees are relatively docile and easy to work with.

The bee suit is a helpful thing to have when installing queens and checking a hive.

I am using Illinois supers with eight frames.
